Story Work
Story work, or narrative therapy, is a therapeutic approach focused on helping people understand and reshape their personal stories. It is based on the idea that these narratives shape identities and realities. By examining, refraining, and rewriting these stories, people can find healing and personal growth.
Storywork involves examining and reconstructing your life’s narrative or “self-stories”. By articulating and reflecting on these stories, you can gain a deeper understanding of your motivations, fears, beliefs, and past experiences that have shaped who you are today.
Our “self-stories” can sometimes create limiting beliefs or rigid narratives about ourselves and the world around us. Engaging in story work allows you to identify these unhelpful narratives, question their validity, and rewire them in a way that empowers you and supports your well-being. This process can lead to emotional processing, resolving unresolved trauma, and a sense of “mental liberation” from self-criticism and negative thinking.
When you have a stronger sense of self and your own narrative, you are better equipped to navigate external pressures and societal expectations. You can make choices that align with your values and live more authentically, rather than being solely driven by what others expect of you.
